Position paper "Demand for the development of grid-forming STATCOM systems" (08.12.2020)

The TSOs are advocating a new generation of STATCOM systems: these help to maintain system stability despite higher utilization of the electricity grid through controllable reactive power.

The reactive power demand of the German transmission grid is constantly increasing due to higher capacity utilization, the expansion of the transmission grid and market-related effects. The German transmission system operators have identified a need for the addition of controllable compensation units, which is to be covered to a large extent by so-called STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) systems.

In contrast to the current grid-supporting (current-injecting) control concept, these systems are to be implemented using grid-forming (voltage-injecting) control concepts.

The German TSOs see an urgent need for the development of a new generation of STATCOM systems to ensure system stability and thus the successful implementation of the energy transition.
